Valle d’Aosta, a small Italian region located in the north-west of the peninsula, is a very popular destination in winter, thanks to its beautiful landscapes and an abundant tourist offer. There are many ski resorts in Valle d’Aosta to visit, many of which are already famous for some peculiar features that attract many mountain lovers. We recommend six of them, all to visit at least once in a lifetime.

Gressoney
Gressoney-Saint-Jean, an elegant tourist resort at 1385 metres above sea level, is situated in a particularly interesting scenic setting with a view of the imposing Monte Rosa massif. The valley is accessed from Pont-Saint-Martin, along the road that runs alongside the Lys stream. The last two municipalities that meet are the most important: Gressoney-Saint-Jean, where you can visit the famous Savoy Castle built by Emilio Stramucci, and the more modern Gressoney-La-Trinité, in the centre of the Monterosa Ski ski area that offers 150 km of slopes. A peculiarity of Gressoney is the Walser culture, which can be found especially in the beautiful traditional houses in the old town centre.

Champoluc
Located at the end of the Val d’Ayas, Champoluc is the most important village in the area and is topped by the Crest plateau. Needless to say, the latter is even more than suggestive when covered by a wonderful and soft white blanket. Champoluc’s ability to blend fun and total relaxation, past and present, is perhaps the characteristic that makes it a favourite destination for everyone: families, couples and groups of friends. In addition to the already mentioned Monterosa Ski area, able to satisfy every lover of snow sports, in fact, there are many and varied activities that you can do. From a bit ‘of wellness in the Monterosa Spa, passing through the Rascard in the village, or, finally, the thrill of getting on the funicular and admire the panorama at high altitude.

Cervinia
Breuil-Cervinia is one of the most famous ski resorts in the Aosta Valley, with one of the most beautiful slopes in Italy: the Ventina. Belonging to the municipality of Valtournenche, Breuil is the original name of this town, born at the end of 1800. Located about thirty kilometers from Saint-Vincent, it is easily accessible and contains, in addition to the fantastic ski slopes, many magical places to discover. First of all here is the highest museum in Europe located at 3500 meters above sea level. Named “A working mountain” it is located at Plateau Rosa (reachable even without skis) and tells the story of the construction of the Furggen and Plateau Rosa cable cars with the help of audio-visual and vintage photos. Secondly, near the small Matterhorn cable car, the Ice Palace is very interesting: caves dug at a depth of fifteen metres. Finally, in Cervinia you can also try the thrill of a fun and a bit alternative experience: driving on ice with karts.

La Thuile
La Thuile is the charming village that can be reached from the equally picturesque Pré-Saint-Didier, famous for its thermal baths. Conca at an altitude of 1441 metres surrounded by forests and imposing mountains, La Thuile is very famous for its ski area connected to La Rosière and for the countless traces of Roman times that can be encountered when visiting it. The parish church, dedicated to St. Nicholas and containing numerous works by local artists, is definitely worth a visit. Wonderful the majestic glacier of the Rutor and the as many naturalistic beauties that can be admired with pleasant walks. Finally, even if you are an expert skier, you must absolutely try the Pista 3 Franco Berthod (the steepest slope in Italy) which had the honour of hosting the Alpine Ski World Cup.

Pila
Let’s move on to another basin, that of Pila! Located in the municipality of Gressan, Pila is mainly renowned for tourism. In winter, it is mainly frequented by skiers and snowboarders, who have 70 km of slopes at their disposal; in summer, in addition to the numerous excursions, it is also possible to go on special mountain-bike trails. Pila, in fact, is a very famous theatre of international downhill races! In short, a wonderful place for sports enthusiasts and for those who want to relax in the silence of the mountains.

Courmayeur
Courmayeur is the famous mountain resort located at the foot of Mont Blanc. It is perfect for winter sports lovers, but also for those looking for other activities or just a good rest at high altitude.
